I still find after 15 years of teaching that progress happens best when I follow the Pilates exercise orders, principles and teach within the framework of the system Joseph Pilates developed. What has captured my imagination over the years is learning to see and understand the subtleties and nuances of movement especially discovering how to improve performance and movement quality. It is fascinating to observe the process unfold whether the level is beginner or anywhere along the line to super advanced students. There is major value in returning back to the basics just as much for the advanced student who unknowingly goes through the motions of familiar exercises as it is for the injured or beginner student. It takes discipline to be present and work with the body as it shows up that day, and make the adjustments necessary to make the hour really matter. That is how break-throughs happen and what keeps Pilates exciting for me as a teacher and especially as a practitioner. |
